Yesterday was Sept. 22, which is Bilbo and Frodo Baggin’s birthday and the day that Frodo set out with the Ring, leaving the Shire.
It’s now OFFICIALLY fall. My room is decorated with pumpkins thrown everywhere with abandon. I am slooooooowing started to outline for NaNoWriMo (once it’s October I’ll probably start panicking and hurling mushrooms or something at my past self for not getting it done earlier) (but my brain has been like a lazer on revising OWWTSF) (it’s now breaking 95k words. I’m guessing it’s gonna be 105k. Actually probably more.)
I’ve been rereading The Lord of the Rings (I started with The Hobbit (backtrack. I actually read the Silmarillion in the spring) and am now halfway through Two Towers) and…I love Bilbo.
So in honor of the 22nd, here are some Bilbo Baggins quotes for your enjoyment.
He’d only just had breakfast, but he thought a cake or two and a drink would do him good after his fright.
The Hobbit
I mean you always need some cake after a fright.
“What is finer than flying?” Bilbo would have liked to say: “A warm bath and a late breakfast on the lawn afterwards.”
The Hobbit
A M E N. I whole heartedly agree. A hot shower and a warm breakfast of pancakes and bacon is all one needs to be happy.
But Bilbo escaped into the woods carrying a loaf and a leather bottle of wine and a pie that did not belong to him.
The Hobbit
We stan the Burglar Bilbo Baggins for stealing the important things.
“Well, are you alive or are you dead?”
The Hobbit
This is to Thorin right after Bilbo drags him out of the barrel and I just. Bilbo’s snark is underrated and under-acknowledged.
“Now you are in for it at last, Bilbo Baggins,” he said to himself. “You want and put your foot right in it that night of the party, and now you have got to pull it out and pay for it!”
The Hobbit
Bilbo is now heading into see Smaug. Also any introvert pulling up to any kind of social gathering.
“Never laugh at live dragons, Bilbo you fool!” he said to himself, and it became a favourite saying of his later and passed into a proverb.
The Hobbit
Had to include this one because I C O N I C.
“Where have you been, friend? why weren’t you at the feast? The Lady Arwen was there.”
Fellowship of the Ring
He’s says this to Aragorn in Rivendell and who knew that Bilbo was such a matchmaker. Also, I love their friendship.
“Say no more! It is plain enough what you are pointing at. Bilbo the silly hobbit started this affair, and Bilbo had better finish it, or himself.”
Fellowship of the Ring
Bilbo is all ready to go and destroy the Ring. He is the best.
And we’ll end with:
“The time has come. I am being swept off my feet at last.
The road goes ever on and on/down from the door where it began/now far ahead the Road has gone/and I must follow, if I can”
Fellowship of the Ring
Hope you enjoyed those. I did, so that’s……….something.
SIDE NOTE since we were talking about fall (we were? You say.) We went antiquing this weekend (which I haven’t done since FOREVER) and I just…love old stuff??? Wandering through an old creaky house with super low ceilings that Gandalf would knock his head on and crooked floors and narrow staircases I swear are going to fall down, digging through a basket of old postcards from the 70’s (one of sunflowers from Kansas), and titled my head as weird angles to read the spines of books, squinting by eyes to read ones nearly worn away and I …..
I need to write a story about an antique store. That’s what I need to do. (WAIT. I KNOW WHERE TO DO THIS) *runs for note book*
“Well,” says…somebody that’s not me. “That’s all she wrote.”
