When You Don’t Feel Like Writing

The setting:

Early, grey morning. I’m half asleep, having been awake all night blowing my nose (spring/summer allergies. BOOOO). I just discovered that I must add 20,000 to my suspense novel.

20,000 words I have NO IDEAS FOR.

And I am exhausted, and my brain is melted and full of snot.

So, what do I do?

This happens to all writers at some point. (I’m not sure about the head full of snot part, but you know what I mean) Days where we don’t feel like writing, whether because we are tired or just brain dead.

But what do you do when you don’t feel like writing?

You can always push through anyways, because no one cares about your feelings.

OK, that sounded mean, but you know what I’m getting at. We can’t rely on our feelings. Sometimes we have to do things that we don’t feel like doing.

And that includes writing.

OR…Do something other than writing or anything writing related.

Clean the house. (It always needs to be done) Do laundry. Run errands. Take the dogs or kiddos for a walk. Visit a friend. Or just take a day for yourself.

You can also do something other than writing your WIP, but still writing related.

Do some outlining, some query writing, some synopsis writing, blogging, etc. Do those things that don’t take inspiration to write.

Give up, crawl into a hole, and never come back. Or jump on a spaceship and become the ruler of Mars and all the little bacteria that live there.

  1. Ruling Mars sounds cool. I bet those bacteria could conquer the universe if given the proper incentive.
